Information about Porto Cristo in Mallorca

Porto Cristo has maintained the charm of the past time. A real harbour village, where a fisher’s and seafarer’s way of life can still be found. Porto Cristo has even today, as the harbour town of Manacor, an important role for all inhabitants of the small and second largest city of Majorca. The Manacoris stay over the summer at Cala Manacor. In the history of the island’s tourism, Porto Cristo is one of the oldest and most traditional vacation places.

A bay, which winds itself into the country side

Who walks along the with pines lined wide main street into the city, does not realize how nice the little town with its tiny and tight streets is. The life is concentrated down at the port: A long, tight and protected bay is winding itself into the little town and ends in the estuary of a little stream. Side-by-side, several ships and boats are lined up at the “Club Nàutic de Porto Cristo“, just as many small wooden fishing boats too. On both sides and connected with a little bridge, restaurants and cafés can be found.

The small, approximately 200 meters long city beach is right next to the city centre and is considered to be a classical majorcan beach. Even though the port and the dock for excursion boats are right next to each other, the water is still clean and the sand is white and fine. A turquoise sea invites everyone to take a bath or to go snorkelling. You can rent some sun beds and a typical Majorcan parasol shield covered with straw.

Vivid hustle at the city beach in Porto Cristo

An especially „Spanish atmosphere“ can be found on Sundays: it is not only time for the weekly market at the Passeig de la Sirena but all families get together with tables, chairs and picnic baskets. The atmosphere is very vivid down at the beach and upstairs at the promenade, where old men are sitting on benches und discuss their latest news. Thereby, you can notice the smell of roasted fish everywhere: having a view of the beach and the port, several restaurants can be found next to each other, each of them is known for their Mediterranean (fish) kitchen, especially their delicious paella dishes.

Spectacular cliff

On the cliff, many new villas were built, amongst others the summer house of Rafael Nadal, the in Manacor born, world famous tennis player. On the southern part of the cliff, the in the 16th century build watchtower Torre de Porto Cristo (also named Torre del Serral dels Falcons) raises high above the ground. It is the landmark of Porto Cristo.

The cliff of Porto Cristo and the whole surrounding is simply stunning: there are several caves and cliffs, whose entrances are most of the time on the same level as the sea or underneath. This unbelievable caves labyrinth is mostly unexplored and reaches far into the centre of the island.

Incredible Stalactite Caves

The caves are those who made Porto Cristo as famous as it is right now: the Coves del Drac (“Dragon caves“) are the most important attraction of the island, as well as the Coves dels Hams (“Fishhook caves“). They are located a little bit remoted from the city centre, taking the street to Manacor. The stalactite system of the dragon caves reaches far more than 1.700 metres, wherefrom one kilometre can be walked down by foot.

Here lies the largest subterranean lake in Europe and one of the largest one’s worldwide: the Llac Martel, named after the French cave explorer Martel, who discovered the cave system in the 19th century. The martel lake is an impressive stage for daily played classical concerts, where musicians play on gondolas. A spectacular light show accompanies the musicians while playing.

It is almost a must for Majorca tourists to visit the caves. A little bit smaller but just as impressive are the Coves dels Hams, located right next to the dragon caves, which also offer small concerts on subterranean lakes between stalactites and stalagmites. The third and smallest cave system, the Coves Blanques (the „white caves“), are located on the eastern side of Cala Manacor, close to the beach and provided shelter for fishers and sea men back in the days.

Adventures in sea caves

As a shelter, also for smugglers and pirates, the close by underwater caves where ideal. Those of you who want to have a real adventure should book an excursion into those caves. For example, with the diving school Skualo Dive Center, which is located in the back of Porto Cristo. By speedboat you go along the coast line, passing by the beaches of Anguila, the Cala Mandia and the Cala Rómantica. Already this is sensationally amazing.

On a cliff, the boat will set its anchor and with neoprene suits and helmet equipped, you will jump into the water. With a guide and a headlight, you can explore the fascinating underwater world of stalagmites, stalactites and sweet water lakes by swimming, climbing and marvelling. The single caves have names like “kitchen”, “cathedral”, “big lake” or “ladies room”. The feeling of being a cave explorer gives you a lot of adrenaline and an unforgettable experience. Also kids who can swim can already participate.

All this and much more, can be discovered by holidaymakers in Porto Cristo, a place which has a lot of character und differentiates itself from other coastline cities.
